Hey there. I support your proposal for the CAD/CAM SE site and I've contributed some ideas. I read the recent SO blog entry about the new SE system (the interview). It contained a link to the top candidates for the beta round of SE sites. Your proposal was included, so I headed over to http://area51.stackexchange.com/ but didn't see the proposal there. I though I'd try and get in touch with you so you could log in and follow through with your idea on the official site suggestion site.

Hi Kenn,

I'm with you on this one. My personal preference would definitely be Revit rather than AutoCAD running on Mac OS, but it may not make much sense economically. Revit to me feels a bit more like an homogenous environment that could be easily "transplanted" to another operating system, but AutoCAD's huge customer base must be still providing most of Autodesk revenue. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the number of people wanting to run AutoCAD on a Mac was bigger than the current Revit user base. Would be nice to see exact numbers. Anyway, I believe that over time it only makes sense if all Autodesk product come to Mac.

Cheers,
Piotr

Thanks Christian. Yeah, F# looks cool and for me (strong engineering background) feels slightly more natural then object oriented languages.
BTW, some time ago I had a good look at your "Crumbs" widget to understand how things work in Gtk#. :-)

I think Apple may yet acquire AutoDesk. At this point, with the growth of Apple and the growth of Linux over almost a decade now, Microsoft just doesn't have the Kung Fu grip on it's customers with Office that they once had. At least 1/2 or more of Windows customers perceive that there are alternative options to Windows that are available to them which has never been the case. Apple owning AutoDesk wouldn't really effect MCSFT even if they discontinued Windows development. If Adobe stopped development on Windows that would adversely effect Windows just from the standpoint of not having Flash would cripple most Windows users that go on the internet. Point is it would take several major applications with major market share leaving to make a significant difference with MCSFT. (Which could happen, since the necessity of Virtual Machines has dominated the Windows scene just to ease the transition from other versions of Windows.)

3DS Max isn't a dominant app in the games space and hasn't been for a couple of years now which is why AutoDesk acquired Alias. Max's relevance in the market was fading. AutoCad used to be the standard for engineers, designers and architects, but with the advent of CAM and multiple other specialty enigineering areas that now have design along with the calculations, the markets got splintered which is why AutoDesk is constantly acquiring companies that are dominant developers in splintered markets that they once owned. The major issue with AutoDesk is that constantly buying dissimilar code bases, never integrating them, and essentially running them as full companies under one roof is eventually going to take them under when outside competitors continue pushing on them.

Architecture/Engineering is important to Apple, but ultimately since Apple is already heavily invested the entertainment space an AutoDesk acquisition would secure that investment by keeping the tools that create a significant portion of the content that's fed into Apple's Entertainment tools on the Mac and optimized for OS X. I don't necessarily see Apple taking the same kind of stance as AutoDesk with the engineering tools just for the pure simple fact that many companies making competitive products decided to to partner with Apple a long time ago...However, where you look at say the SolidWorks and Bentley Systems markets they are rather large and those companies never sided with Apple. With buying AutoDesk Apple would secure a large investment they already have, become a market leader in architecture design and get the tools to get after some rather large markets in ways they haven't seen before with a level of usability that they haven't seen before. There are a lot of pluses. The major minus would be for Apple to take on the task of merging the similar code bases as much as possible to dramatically reduce development costs. As one reader mentioned porting the apps to OS X probably won't be that hard, but merging the code bases would be another story, but if any company could do it, make the applications better and cheaper to develop it would be Apple.

It depends what you want to do with it. If you simply want to use it then I'm afraid it's not ready yet. Not even close to be usable.

Well, Microsoft, even if Autodesk is Friendly friendly with them just fucked them. They realeased Vista 64bit without any OpenGL support....Well autoCAD runs mainly on OpenGL & it can run on Direct3D but it looses 2 (out of 5 features) of their biggest 3d Features. Smooth line rendering and another. So they have to program on .NET wich.. as the latest 2009 is not nice to work with . A program that works....about at 50% on Vista 64bit (plotters dont work, some drivers dont work) & they are stuck with Direct3D...AutoCAD 2002 can be easily ported on MacOS it runs fine on WINE (crossover) and now with MONO by Novell that translates .NET on Linux & MAC it would be great.

OpenGL is fully supported on MAC & Linux
64-bit programming as been done AGES AGO on MAC & Linux
Most programs fully use processors multi-threading in Linux and MAC

... why would you go with something that works 1/2 the time.

Google works mainly on Linux and MAC...and its huge.
Why not Smaller companies.

@Alan:
Thanks for your interest. As you can see on screenshots, Psycho was intended to work as an outliner right from the beginning. I've had the TreeView working long before I was able to produce any graphical view of the map. I actually have an idea for a nice custom TreeView widget with inline notes and other goodies, but as you can see I have problems moving from ideas to realization. Simply not enough skill, time, help etc...

I noticed your project a while back and am excited about it.

Of the mindmapping and outlining software that I have tried so far, I found MyMind to suit my tastes. See: http://www.sebastian-krauss.de/software/ . Unfortunately, it is a Mac application and the application is outdated. I read somewhere that the author got injured in a car accident.

Anyway, MyMind's behaviour is awesome and you can edit from both the mind map and the outliner. The available screenshot does not show it but each node can have notes, links and attachments.

GPS information for each image is not something for everyone. If I take the camera to Disneyland, I pretty much know where I'm at. But on a trip with friends through Europe a few years back (my last trip shooting film), those fjords, mountains, and other majestic scenery started to run together in our minds. Shots from London were easy to identify on sight, but rural England or Normandy in France were not. The first thing my wife said when I showed her the N1 and told her what it did was, "too bad we didn't have that for the Europe trip." Sure, digital cameras can be set to record dates and times, and that can be a help in identifying difficult sites. But nothing identifies a site like the lat-long, and that's the extra level of information provided by the N1.

The N1 seems well-built and is quick and easy to use. It's light and compact, almost to the point of not even being there, and it eliminates the need for Nikon and PC connector cables in order to utilize a standard GPS for data gathering.

I've shot Nikon equipment since 1975, and I've always been a tiny bit leery of using "third party" equipment: with some third-party flash units and lenses known to give users fits, I was concerned. How would the Solmeta fare? Would it work? Thankfully, worrying about the Solmeta turned out to be a waste of time and energy. The N1 mated up to the D3 with no problems, and worked flawlessly in terrain ranging from seashore to mountain top to desert. Single frames per second or high speed shooting rates were all no problem. I shot it on my D300, D2x, and D200 as well, and it never missed a beat. In short, if you're in the market for GPS capability for your DSLR, Solmeta is worth a long look based on my experience with their N1.

The N1 is available from Solmeta for $288 USD, shipping included. Their website is www.solmeta.com.

Pros:

    * Small size, simple camera interface
    * Quick acquisition/ready-to-shoot times
    * Creative power options
    * Good build quality and materials

Cons:

    * Cost - you can probably get a GPS capability for less going the traditional GPS route, albeit with a less user-friendly setup

I also have CML, I was diagnosed 6 years ago, I had a BMT and it didn't quite work like planned. Anyway, I am on Gleevec also for the third time, but I am doing an Exhibit board on CML for school, and I like your images of the philadelphia chromosome... anyway, this blog is probably too old, but if you get this, can I use your pictures on my Exhibit board? Please?
Thanks

I think it's not about selling os x client licenses to Autocad users. Microsoft dominates in client licenses through office, but it also dominates with exchange and windows server. Lotus notes is in decline.

Apple now has os x server / i cal server at close to par with MS and at a far superior price. They need an office product to push os x server licenses and displace MS exchange from the corporate office.

You might be able to force maya users to dump windows and linux, but I don't think apple can force autocad and 3ds max users to switch because of all the custom macros for autocad and the fact that 3ds games are being produced for windows.

It looks like autodesk, adobe, and apple all want to grow a business in content management server software related to whatever content their tools produce. With Autodesk's products apple can develop back end apps that are integrated across all of apples pro software , and even if autocad/3ds max/maya users are still using windows, apple can push os x server and server based products.

The other big key is 3ds max. If apple controlled the tool that people use to develop 3d for games, it might be able to push more opengl and make it easier to develop games for both windows and mac.

And I'm a software engineer and I don't see porting a .net app to mac as that big of a deal. Yeah, it's been heavily integrated with windows since they added visual basic support eons ago, and autocad is a beast, but the chance to knock down MS in games and the office is worth billions to apple. Apple's already done this on a smaller scale with their pro software and the user interface improved in the process.

Actually (and I myself am a litle surprised by this), our software QA has become increasingly dependent on VMware. Part of it that is that there are so many versions of Windows to deal with: 2000, XP32, Vista32, Vista64, occasionally XP64, and once a year IA64. I think an argument could made for VMs and vertical software, since setup/maintenance requires more work (and VMs are easier - note the "-er" to manage). With the latest hardware (and TONS of memory), the speed is fine. Disclaimer: I've only seen this all done under Windows.

Yeah, I'd like to see that in a big corporate environment. Buying additional operating system and virtualization software to run it and them managing that in the whole organization. Good luck... :-)

@Troy:
I definitely think that having Autodesk products run on other platforms would be great, for both Autodesk and customers but unfortunately there is more to it than just what's good for customers.

About possibilities - who knows, how much of AutoCAD is written in .Net and how much is exposed as managed APIs. I would suspect that the whole core of AutoCAD is still written as unmanaged C++ code and just the "visual" bit on top are .Net. Beside it, there are .Net implementations that run on other platforms (www.mono-project.com). Also, in a rather unexpected move a few months ago Microsoft has announced that they will be releasing the whole .Net source code for everyone to look at - Apple could easily sign some sort of agreement with them and reimplement .Net on Mac OS. With their resources hardly anything is impossible.

@Robin:
Exactly! I think the first time I have read about DWF reader for a Mac was 2003? Maybe Apple decided to rectify the situation on their own... :-)
By the way, just like you, I'm also a big fan of mind mapping (www.psycho-project.org).

I definitely think that having Autodesk products run on other platforms would be great, for both Autodesk and customers but unfortunately there is more to it than just what’s good for customers.

About possibilities – who knows, how much of AutoCAD is written in .Net and how much is exposed as managed APIs. I would suspect that the whole core of AutoCAD is still written as unmanaged C++ code and just the “visual” bit on top are .Net.
This would be the Autodesk that haven't even bothered creating a MAC OS compatible viewer application for their "universal" DWF file format after, what, a decade or so?

It would be very difficult for this to happen. All Autodesk products are heavily developed in Microsoft's .NET. To reprogram all of the applications would take a very long time, meaning that they wouldn't release new features for years and that would make Autodesk users very upset.

I read most of this as maybe Apple helping Autodesk port many of its programs to work on Apple since it is now an Intel cpu system. Running on both OS's would be a win-win for the users of the software.

Sure, not a problem. I'll upload it to Flickr in the afternoon and send
you the link. I'm glad you liked it enough to make a present out of it.
If that gift is not very urgent I could recommend a company that I used
for printing some of my pictures (50x70 cm prints) and they come out
awesome. The problem is that they are in US and the shipping takes some
time.

I am wanting to make a farwell present to a mate who's company is shipping him to Tauranga, so I have been looking for a painting or print of Auckland, the intension is to get everyone he knows to sign the back of it. But a huge trip around the Auclkland shops has come up a fat zero. PLan B get a photo and frame it :-) could I hassle you for a full resolution email copy of "Auckland by nite 5"

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your support. It's not too bad. Drugs seem to work fine so I'm all good.

I simply forgot to pay for the domain. Have just done it now. Next time I'll have to pay for a few years not to have to worry about it. I'm still trying to work on Psycho from time to time but I have problem finding motivation to sit in front of the computer, especially that the summer is just starting here. :-)
I'm playing a bit with cairo trying to write very simple Psycho canvas.

HI, just checked back for psycho.

First of all: didn't know you were sick. Sounds bad. I wish you all the best!

Secondly (hopefully you don't consider this inappropriate to ask right now) what's going on with psycho? Seems the domain is hijacked :(

Thanks for your kind words. It's nice to know that someone likes something that I care about. :-)

I still work on Psycho, although not as much as I would like to - I've got a lot of other things going on at the moment. But sometimes when I feel like taking my mind off those bad things I start working on that project. I would like to get to a state where people could use it, even in a limited way. That would allow for getting some more publicity and attracting some more developers.

So, I hope you'll get a chance to use Psycho in a real life some day.

Hi, just found out about Psycho and I must say that it looks really cool and promising.

There really is need for a GTK-MindMapping tool, especially when looking at those great for Qt.

I hope you're still continuing development :)

Thanks!

By the way, did you know that Mike Jetter has created Mind Manager while he was treated for CML? That is one creepy coincidence... :-)

Hi Piotr,

Thanks for getting back to me. Don't worry, they are still in business, they replied to my email only a day later. That couldn't understand why I was getting the message as they are still enrolled with Paypal. I discovered later that it was because I use Opera as my browser. When i tried it with Internet Explorer it worked fine and my di-GPS N2 is now ordered.

Cheers,

Yes, I have got it from their website, and the transaction went through without a problem. I'm sorry to hear about your problem and I certainly hope they didn't go out of business. It wouldn't be good in case my receiver breaks down and I need to get it fixed or replaced... :-(

Hi piotr,

Thanks for the review, very interesting,

I'm convinced but when I tried to purchase an N2 di-GPS mini from Dawn Technology, the shopping cart failed with a message from Paypal saying the link recipient is not an authorised shoppiong cart user - did you purchase from the dawntech website? I'm wondering if they are still in business.

Cheers,

Hi again,

No, I didn't use it under the trees but I tried it at home and it didn't have any problem fixing the position even a few meters from the window. Pretty amazing. I recommend it without any hesitation.

Cheers,
Piotr

Hi Harald,

No, I didn't use their software - I simlpy didn't buy it. And I didn't buy it because I didn't believe that it provides any functionality worth paying for it.
As far as I can tell it allows you to produce a KML file to load to Google Maps and you can do almost exactly that with GeoRSS feed from Flickr.
That software would be a nice free addition to N2 but to buy it? I don't think so.

Cheers,
Piotr

Hi,

it's me again. And just another question: Do you have meanwhile any experiences with the N2 di-GPS mini in forrests or next to trees? No problem at all? Or no chance?

And...again...thanks a lot.

Great,

I am just thinking to buy the N2 di-GPS mini for my Nikon D200. Just one question: Did you work also with their software?

Thanks a lot.

Well, if Darth Ballmer doesn't stop rattling his light saber I may go even further and rewrite Psycho in Python. :-)

Google Code is pretty cool. SVN itself workd slightly slower then the one at Novell but the whole project website is much easier and nicer to use. BTS seems really good to me and the best thing of all is the Wiki that you can update through SVN.

Ok ok that was not clever but I was suggesting maybe the Portuguese accent does not quite sound like the Brazilian's... like a Northerner French does not sound like a Southerner French, or a Belgian or Swiss.

And that's where I noticed Greg sounds like a mix of Jamie Oliver and Elton John when he got his fingers stuck in his piano. Norbert brought the conclusion by giving a Slovak biscuit to our favourite Polish.

Well, the first thing I always assume (and I'm almost always right about it) is that it's my mistake. In this case I thought there something wrong with allocation, area redrawing or something like that. Seems like I'll have to get it running on Linux again. No, I've still got no unit test created. Seems like the next important thing to tackle.

Hmmm...
1. The NodeCollection is also List<t> based. It's in fact quite similar to my Topics class.
2. Well, there is no way I'm going to draw without anti-aliasing. I'd rather drop the project than create a crappy looking one.
3. I've done a similar thing. When I draw rectangles with fixed dimensions (not based on the Pango.Layout size) it's fast enough.

PS. No co ty Swider. Bedziemy sie wyglupiac w rozmowe po angielsku na blogu zamiast mailem po ludzku?</t>

PS2: I've written simple code that generates tree of topics (using List object - just like yourself) using my HDD structure as input and draws it on screen (simple way - just frames without names connected by bezier line) and it runs like hell. I'm using standard forms - no mono/cairo.

Try using Node and NodeCollection instead of using List. They are generic tree classes that may be way better optimized for operating tree structures than List which you are using now (in project version I have). More info at http://www.codeproject.com/csharp/trees.asp
